HOW A BATTERY AND TRANSFER SWITCH PROTECT YOUR HOME
Stored Power Plus The Switch That Makes It Usable
A battery stores energy from your panels or the grid. During an outage, a transfer switch isolates your home from the grid so it can run safely on stored power. Dominion notes that solar systems shut off when utility power fails, so backup requires both storage and a transfer switch.
WHAT ASHBURN HOMEOWNERS GET FROM HOME STORAGE
Backup, Flexibility And A Stronger Solar Investment
A home battery keeps your essential circuits running when the grid goes down and lets you use more of the power your panels produce. Here is what that looks like in practice:
Critical circuits stay on through a grid outage
Your solar array can recharge the battery during daylight
You can shift usage away from peak rate periods, if your plan has them
Batteries can be added to a new or existing solar system
Stored solar power can cover evening use at home
Certified storage equipment may qualify for Loudoun's property tax exemption

RESILIENCE, PLANNED IN ADVANCE
What Home Storage Means in Northern Virginia
Most Ashburn homes depend on a single utility connection, and a storm can interrupt it with no notice. A battery changes what an outage means. Refrigeration, lighting, internet and medical devices stay on while neighbors wait on repairs.
How the system is set up matters. With a transfer switch, a battery can power chosen circuits through an outage. Panels alone won’t, because they shut down for safety when the grid is down. We specify the circuits and capacity together so the system fits your priorities.
Incentives for home batteries in Virginia are limited and changing, so we don’t promise rebates we can’t confirm. What we can do is design the system to hold up on its own merits, then check current options when we quote.

ASHBURN BATTERY FAQ
Answers Before You Buy a Home Battery
We believe an informed homeowner makes the best decision. Here are the questions we get asked most, answered honestly.
Can I install a battery without solar?
Yes. Dominion allows batteries as part of a generation system, but a battery alone doesn’t count as generation. Without panels, it charges from the grid and mainly serves backup and rate-shifting.
Which brands do you install?
We have no default. We recommend the system that fits your home’s loads, panel capacity and budget, and we explain why.
How long will it power my home in an outage?
For essential loads, typically 12 to 24 hours. Summer air-conditioning draws a lot, so what you connect matters most. Larger systems last longer.
How long does installation take?
One day for a stand-alone battery and two to three days alongside new solar. The county permit and utility steps come first, and we give you a schedule before work begins.
Are there incentives?
The federal homeowner credit for owned systems ended for work finished after December 31, 2025. Loudoun’s property tax exemption covers certified energy storage equipment, subject to application. We check for other programs at quote time.
